Q. Are stem cell injections legal?
A. Yes. The use of your own tissue to treat a medical problem in your body is legal if doctors follow certain rules and regulations developed by the FDA. With that said, culture expanding stem cells and creating a stromal vascular fraction stem cell solution from raw fat has been outlawed by the FDA as early as December of 2011. As long as the procedure is performed on the same day in the same clinic where the cells were harvested and we do not over-manipulate them, we are operating within the guidelines and rules specified by the FDA. Some clinics are reportedly using an SVF derived stem cell treatment regimen with an IRB approved study protocol that is registered with the FDA. I have not seen proof that the FDA has approved this study, so the patient should ask for proof that they are in such a study protocol that is legal and above board.
