What is progesterone?
Progesterone is a hormone produced by the ovaries and is used in the body to balance estrogen. Progesterone serves as a precursor to DHEA, estrogen, testosterone, and cortisol. Progesterone and estrogen are the main hormones responsible for the menstrual cycle. Estrogen is dominant in the first half and progesterone in the second half of the menstrual cycle. Progesterone also helps the body to use fat for energy, enhances thyroid hormone action, and improves sexual drive. It is also a natural antidepressant, natural tranquilizer, and a natural diuretic.
Symptoms of low progesterone include:
- Breast tenderness
- Weight gain
- Decreased libido
- Decreased quality of life
- PMS symptoms – moodiness, irritability, bloating, headaches
If you are experiencing some of these symptoms, a simple blood test will help us determine if your progesterone level is too low. If so, replenishing your progesterone level with Bioidentical Progesterone will help to maintain optimal hormone balance. It is very important to realize that synthetic progestin (Provera) is not the same as natural progesterone. Synthetic progestins cause significant problems and side effects and do not provide the benefits of Bioidentical Progesterone.
What can Bioidentical Progesterone replacement do for me?
- Increase HDL (good cholesterol) levels
- Decrease total cholesterol levels
- Improve emotional instability and mood swings
- Improve headaches
- Improve sleep
- Enhance overall well-being
- Protection against uterine and breast cancer
- Halt progression of osteoporosis (stimulates the cells that grow new bone)
In summary, Bioidentical Progesterone protects against breast and uterine cancer, is a natural tranquilizer, promotes feeling of well-being, enhances the beneficial actions of estrogen, relieves menopausal and PMS symptoms, stimulates new bone formation and protects against cardiovascular disease. Provera has not been shown to do any of these things. Bioidentical Progesterone is what your body is craving. If you no longer have a uterus some physicians believe you don't need Progesterone anymore but may still put you on Estrogen due to menopause symptoms. The scientific literature shows you must balance the negative effects of Estrogen with a healthy dose of Progesterone. Even using Progesterone creams can be adsorbed in such low doses it has a similar effect of leaving you with an abundance of Estrogen, which can lead to increased risk of breast cancer. At the Wellness Center of Springfield your doctors will develop the best treatment program to get the maximum benefit of a balanced approach using healthy levels of Estrogen and Progesterone with follow-up lab test to make sure your levels are optimal.
